Deacon formation: New prerequisites

Dear Father or Deacon,

In approximately 18 - 24 months we will be looking at beginning a new cohort of the Common Formation Program for the Permanent Deacon candidates.  In consultation with those in ministerial formation for our Diocese, I want to inform you that the  Certification Level I  for ministry, offered through our Pastoral Services department, will now be a formal prerequisite for application to the permanent diaconate.  It is the experience of those who educate and form our permanent deacons that sometimes this basic level of theological understanding is not fully present at the time the formation commences.  I believe the Certification Level I formation will provide the necessary foundation upon which the candidates for the permanent diaconate can then begin fruitful formation. 

I am writing to you at this time in the event you know of an appropriate candidate for the permanent diaconate.  It would be most prudent to discuss this prerequisite with them now so that they can fulfill the requirement prior to our opening the application process.
